How to Convert Videos to AVI Absolutely Free

These software options will allow you to convert from a number of input formats, such as MPEG, WMV, DivX, XviD, and MP4---some of the most popular video formats among PC and Mac users. These are free programs that require only that you download and install the software. Depending on the size of your input video file, conversions may take several minutes.

      Follow the download link on iWisoft Free Video Converter's main page to download the software (see Resources). Run the installation file and open the program.

      Click the "+ Add" button near the upper-left corner of the screen to enter the input file search window. Locate your input video on your computer and click "Open."

      Click the "Profile" drop-down box and hold your cursor over the "Common Video" sub-menu. Choose one of the "AVI" output options.

      Click the "Start" button to begin converting to AVI.

    Quick Media Converter

      Follow the link for Quick Media Converter's download page (see Resource). Click the "Download QMC" button on the left side of the web page and wait for the program to download. (The file is about 40 MBs. The amount of time it takes to download will depend largely on the speed of your Internet connection). Install Quick Media Converter and launch the program.

      Find the video on your computer you want converted. Drag your video's icon into the middle of Quick Media Converter's screen to load it in the program.

      Click the "DivX" icon at the top of Quick Media Converter's screen. Choose an "AVI" option from the sub-menu that appears when you click the "DivX" button.

      Press the icon to the right of the "Start Conversion" field to begin your conversion. You can track the conversion progress by watching the progress bar move along the bottom of the screen.

    Extensoft Free Video Converter

      Launch your web browser. Navigate to the download page for Extensoft's Free Video Converter (see Resource). Click the download button and wait for your download to complete. Run through the install process and open Extensoft Free Video Converter.

      Click the "Add Video Clip" button near the upper-left corner of the program's main screen to enter a search menu for your input video. Find your input video on your hard drive by using the search screen and click "Open."

      Click the "Export" tab at the top of the screen. Press the "Profile" drop-down menu and select an "AVI" option as your output.
